The Problem Client X had a serious problem: Their web site had become too successful for its own good. Although many of us dream of having such a problem, the increase in traffic to Client X's site was having a very negative effect on the user experience. Pages were displaying slowly, searching was unusable and users were abandoning their shopping carts. Client X's solution was simply not built to scale to the traffic they were experiencing. With traffic increases of 10 to 20 times, their site could not keep up. Other vendors had quoted them solutions that would cost them up to 10 times what they had in planned in their budget. What to do? Our Solution SineWave Technologies experienced team of engineers designed a solution that would not only handle Client X's current load, but scale up to handle much more. We used PHP and MySQL to redevelop the site and Linux and Apache as the back end applications to support the web site. Finally, we divided the back end applications into several system "clusters". Using load balancing technology, we were able to use less expensive hardware in a redundant configuration to ensure the fastest response time and the highest level of reliability possible. Benefits Client X continued to grow over the next 4 years, processing more than 100 times the number of transactions than when we first engaged them. They had full ownership and control over their infrastructure and systems. All of their solutions were fully documented and developed using the most open standards possible. Finally, the solution was designed, implemented, and maintained by SineWave Technologies for a 5-figure budget, not the 6- and 7-figure budgets quoted to Client X by other vendors.
